Scrooged in Astoria

‘Scrooged in Astoria’ is a sweet holiday treat

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. The Astor Street Opry Company’s (ASOC) third annual holiday show “Scrooged in Astoria” arrives just in time for your holiday group party.

“Scrooged in Astoria,” written by Judith Niland with original songs by Philip Morrill, is an ASOC melodramatic adaptation of the beloved classic by Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol.” But, in ASOC’s original story we find the not-so-beloved character from “Shanghaied in Astoria,” the penny-pinching, miserly Max Krooke Jr., being guided by the Ghosts of Christmas – “Past,” the “Big” Krooke, “Presents,” Miss Macie and “Future,” Saint Lucia – to learn the errors of his ways.

All wound together with sentimental Christmas songs and Scandinavian traditions, performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, Dec. 3 through 19, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. Doors open one-half hour before curtain. Tickets are $8 to $15, with group, senior and child rates available. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended.

The Astor Street Opry Company Playhouse is located at 129 W. Bond St. For information or reservations, call (503) 325-6104. For more, visit www.astorstreetoprycompany.com
