Goonies 25th Preview
It’s been 25 years since The Goonies first hit the silver screen, but diehard fans still show up on the North Oregon Coast to tour the coastal towns that served as the movie’s primary locations. In tribute to the film’s long-lasting popularity and loyal cult following, the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce is planning a 25th anniversary celebration in honor of the movie’s original 1985 release. Scheduled for June 4-7, 2010, the anniversary event is expected to draw thousands of fans to the area.
The Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce invites any interested community members to come to a free showing of The Goonies on Wednesday, February 17, at 6:30pm at the Liberty Theater (doors open at 6:00pm). They will speak about plans for the event and how local residents and businesses can get involved through volunteer opportunities, event sponsorship and participation in a variety of event activities.
“Ashamed, many locals admit to me that they would like to help with the event in June, but have not watched the movie at all, or at least not seen it in years – myself included,” shared Regina Willkie, Astoria-Warrenton Chamber Marketing Manager. “We felt showing The Goonies would be a great way to have some fun with the community while at the same time sharing the great opportunities that ‘Goonies 25’ offers to our volunteers and businesses alike.”
As the planning continues, additional details about the events will be posted at www.gooniesanniversary.com . For more information, visitors may contact the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce, goonies@oldoregon.com, (503) 325-6311 or (800) 875-6807.
